Project Final Report

Hello everyone! I’m Rubén Serrano, and I’m excited to share my final report for the WP Credits course. This report summarizes my contributions to the WordPress Polyglots Team, the challenges I faced, and the skills I gained throughout this experience. I hope my journey inspires others to get involved in open-source projects!

I contributed to the WordPress Polyglots Team, which focuses on translating WordPress into different languages to make it accessible to people around the world. My main focus was on translating plugin strings so that users can better understand what each plugin does and how to use it. The goal was to make plugins more accessible to Spanish-speaking users, ultimately encouraging broader adoption and usage.

To complete my contributions, I used both WordPress.org and WordPress.com as my main resources. Beyond the translation tools, I made sure to research and understand the purpose and functionality of each plugin I translated. This contextual understanding was essential to providing accurate and meaningful translations rather than just literal word-for-word conversions. I believe that understanding the context behind the content is key to producing quality translations.

Like any new experience, this journey came with its challenges:

  • Navigating a new environment: At the beginning, the WordPress ecosystem felt overwhelming. There were many tools, platforms, and processes to learn simultaneously. However, with time and practice, everything started to make sense and become more intuitive.
  • Understanding plugin context: Translating strings without understanding what a plugin does can lead to inaccurate translations. I solved this by always researching each plugin before translating it, ensuring the translations were contextually accurate.
  • Working remotely for the first time: This was my first remote working experience, which brought its own set of challenges around communication and time management. I learned to adapt quickly and develop new working habits.

During this course, my main contributions included:

  • Plugin string translations for the WordPress Polyglots Team, helping Spanish-speaking users better understand and use various WordPress plugins.
  • A WordPress website with a blog section, where I published posts and practiced the skills learned throughout the course.

This course has been a truly enriching experience. My key takeaways include:

  • Navigating a new work environment: Learning to work within the WordPress ecosystem from scratch was a valuable skill in itself.
  • Remote work dynamics: This was my first experience working remotely, and it taught me how important structure and self-discipline are when working from home.
  • The importance of communication: Working with people from different locations taught me that clear and consistent communication is absolutely essential for any collaborative project to succeed.

Through this project, I gained both technical and soft skills:

  • Technical: Familiarity with WordPress.org and WordPress.com platforms, plugin translation workflows, and website creation using the WordPress Block Editor.
  • Soft Skills: Remote work adaptability, time management, asynchronous communication, and giving and receiving constructive feedback in a professional environment.

Contributing to WordPress through the WP Credits course has been a rewarding and eye-opening experience. It was my first time working remotely, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned, not just about WordPress, but about collaboration, communication, and working as part of a global team.

While my future plans with WordPress are not yet fully defined, this experience has given me a strong foundation and a new perspective on open-source collaboration. Whatever path I take next, the skills and lessons learned here will certainly be valuable. It has been a great experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity!
